Flogger Brushes

• Bristle: Long natural hair (typically horse hair or black bristle)

A flogger creates the small, irregular marks that mimic wood pores in faux bois (wood-graining) work. Unlike most brushes, you don't pull it across the surface — you tap or whip the bristles flat against wet glaze. The whipping motion displaces the glaze in tiny flecks and ticks that read as natural pore detail.

Best suited to:

• Faux mahogany, walnut, oak, cherry, and teak finishes
• Background texture work before adding heart grain
• Distressing glazes for an aged, hand-painted look
• Softening and breaking up flat colour fields in decorative work

Pair with a graining comb or rocker for full wood-grain effects. Use 2" for narrow detail, 3" for general work, and 4" for larger panels and broader strokes.

Wash thoroughly after each use - soap and warm water for water-based glazes, white spirit followed by soap for oil. Reshape the bristles with your fingers and hang to dry by the handle hole. Never stand the brush on its bristles. Stored properly, a quality flogger keeps its shape and softness for years.
