This group comprises a series of cool greys and blue-greys whose origins lie in the mineral and carbonaceous pigments historically employed in architectural decoration. Such colours have occupied a prominent position within interior schemes from the eighteenth century onwards, where their restrained tonality complemented both stone colours and stronger decorative treatments. Their soft, atmospheric quality is indicative of the nuanced surfaces produced by limewash, distemper and other traditional paint systems.
