This group brings together a collection of blues and violets whose use in architectural decoration became more widespread with the introduction of new pigments and changing attitudes towards colour in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Such hues are encountered in painted finishes, wallpapers and ornamental schemes, where they offered a cooler counterpart to the warmer palette of ochres, reds and buff earths. Their characteristic clarity and subdued brilliance are reminiscent of the refined decorative traditions associated with the Georgian, Regency and Victorian periods.
