Raw Umber is a traditional natural earth pigment derived from iron and manganese-rich clays, valued for its subdued olive-brown tones and exceptional permanence. Used since antiquity and widely employed by Renaissance masters, it has long been an essential component of artists' colours and architectural paints. Named after the Italian region of Umbria, from which high-quality deposits were historically obtained, Raw Umber remains one of the most versatile and enduring pigments available.

Renowned for its excellent lightfastness and compatibility with breathable paint systems, Raw Umber has been used extensively in limewash, distemper, casein paints and other traditional wall paints. Its understated character makes it particularly suited to historic interiors and exteriors, where it can be employed to create warm neutrals, stone colours and subtle greens. It also blends harmoniously with ochres and other earth pigments to produce authentic period colour palettes.

Rose of Jericho supplies high-quality Raw Umber pigment for use in traditional decorative finishes and conservation projects. Its natural mineral composition, durability and timeless earthy character make it an indispensable pigment for the restoration and decoration of historic buildings.
