Prussian (Paris) Blue 45210

Discovered in Berlin in the early eighteenth century, Prussian Blue was the first modern synthetic pigment and rapidly transformed European painting and decoration. Its rich, intense colour provided a practical alternative to costly ultramarine and it soon became widely used by artists such as Canaletto, Gainsborough, Turner and Hokusai. By the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Prussian Blue had become a staple pigment in fine art, decorative paintwork, wallpapers and printed textiles.

Characterised by its deep blue tone and exceptional tinting strength, Prussian Blue produces colours ranging from delicate pale blues to rich navy shades. It possesses excellent permanence and lightfastness, making it particularly valuable for both traditional paint manufacture and conservation work. Historic examples of its use are frequently encountered in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century interiors.

Rose of Jericho supplies high-quality Prussian Blue pigment for use in distemper, oil paints and other traditional finishes. Its distinctive hue, durability and historical significance make it an indispensable pigment for the accurate recreation and conservation of period decorative schemes.  Prussian Blue is not reliably alkali stable and shouldn’t be used in lime based paints except when added immediately before application.  If let to sit in wet limewash it will fade quickly to grey.
