Stippler Brushes

A stippler creates pattern by tapping the bristle tips straight down into wet glaze, lifting tiny specks of colour to leave a finely textured, evenly broken finish. Unlike a softener, it's used with a deliberate pouncing motion rather than light sweeping - the goal is texture, not blending.

Common uses:

• Stippling - applying a uniform speckled finish over walls or panels
• Softening colour transitions on large areas where a softener can't keep up
• Adding texture to base layers before further glazing or graining
• Creating subtle background pattern on decorative work

The flat-faced design and angled handle let you keep the bristles square to the surface while keeping your hand clear. Choose the size to match the area: 4" x 1" for trim and detail, 4" x 3" for general work, 6" x 4" for full walls.

Charge a fitch or flat brush with glaze and lay it over a dry basecoat. While wet, hit the surface straight on with the stippler, lifting the brush cleanly between each strike. Build up the texture across the panel keeping pressure consistent - uneven pressure shows in the finish.

Wash thoroughly after use. Cool soapy water for water-based glazes, white spirit followed by soap for oil. Reshape the bristles with your fingers and hang to dry by the handle. Heavy use can compact the bristles over time - fluffing them out by hand while damp keeps them open.
