Cobalt Blue CBT

Cobalt Blue is one of the most celebrated blue pigments of the nineteenth century. Developed in 1802 by the French chemist Louis Jacques Thénard, it was introduced as a stable and durable alternative to the expensive natural ultramarine derived from lapis lazuli. Its pure, slightly cool tone and exceptional permanence quickly established it as a favourite among artists and decorative craftsmen, and it remains one of the finest blue pigments available.

Renowned for its excellent lightfastness and chemical stability, Cobalt Blue has been widely employed in artists' colours, ceramic glazes and traditional wall paints. Its mineral composition makes it particularly well suited to limewash, distemper, casein paints and other breathable finishes, where it produces clear, luminous blues with remarkable longevity. Historic examples can be found in decorative schemes dating from the nineteenth century onwards.
