Description
There is doubt as whether the colour we know as Tuscan Red was originally found on the walls of the Villas of Tusculum, a health resort 15 miles south of Rome, or used earlier by the mysterious Etrurians, early inhabitants of Tuscany. It is a warm saturated red, based on natural red ochre and burnt yellow ochre deepened by local haematite, found on many buildings in the Tuscan landscape. Mediaeval and Renaissance painters including Michelangelo used red ochre for fresco, tempera, drawing and oil painting.
Our Tuscan Red is produced by mixing a blend of red and yellow ochres with burnt umber.
