Slate Dust
Additional information
Our Slate Dust is a specialized crushed aggregate designed for the conservation of buildings in regions where slate masonry and traditional dark-toned mortars are prevalent. Sourced from high-quality natural slate, this dust provides a deep, authentic blue-grey to charcoal aesthetic that is impossible to achieve with standard sands or artificial pigments.
Because slate is naturally dense and durable, this aggregate is particularly valued in conservation for its ability to produce a crisp, hard-wearing finish while maintaining the necessary vapor permeability required for historic lime-based systems.
-
Authentic Mineral Tones: Provides the natural "inky" blue-grey, grey, or plum hues characteristic of Welsh, Cornish, and Cumbrian heritage architecture.
-
Excellent Workability: When blended with lime, the angular nature of the crushed slate helps create a "fatty," cohesive mortar that is easy to apply and tool.
-
Low Porosity Aggregate: Unlike limestone dusts, slate particles do not absorb water, allowing for predictable drying times and reduced shrinkage in certain mix designs.
