Environmental Considerations

Lime Putty mortar is an environmentally sustainable product.

Usage/Purpose

For bedding and pointing stone and brick where a traditional soft, porous, permeable mortar is appropriate. Do not use below a temperature of 5°C or above 25°C. Do not use if there is risk of frost.

Coverage

Bedding: c.800 – 1000 bricks/ tonne (225mm brickwork), 4m2/ tonne (450mm rubble stonework) Pointing: 100m2/ tonne (brickwork), 40m2/ tonne (random rubble stonework)

Shelf Life

Unlimited. Matures with age. Lime putty mortars stiffen during storage, but can be plasticised without the addition of water by thorough re-mixing.

Colour

Cream coloured mortar. Colour can be matched and adjusted with the addition of stone dust.

Observations

This ‘carbonation’ is a slow process and control of the drying and curing process by ‘tending’ and protecting is crucial to success and long-term performance. Protections are essential.

Application

Tradesmen familiar with the use of lime putty mortar, and with experience of its successful use should be employed. Non-hydraulic lime mortars do not perform as modern hydraulic lime and cement, and set only by reaction with atmospheric carbon dioxide in the presence of moisture. This ‘carbonation’ is a slow process and control of the drying and curing process by ‘tending’ and protecting is crucial to success and long-term performance. Protections are essential.
